Civil construction is behind many of the things we use every day without thinking about who built them.

An apprenticeship or traineeship gives you the chance to learn practical skills on real worksites while earning and completing formal training.

What does someone in civil construction do?

Civil construction covers a wide range of projects.

Depending on the role, you could be involved in:

• Preparing worksites
• Using hand and power tools
• Taking measurements
• Reading plans
• Working around plant and machinery
• Helping with drainage
• Building or maintaining roads and pathways
• Supporting earthworks and other civil projects

The exact work will depend on the Host Employer and the projects they work on.

Is civil construction the same as building houses?

No.

Residential construction is generally focused on homes and buildings.

Civil construction is more focused on infrastructure and outdoor works such as roads, drainage, subdivisions, footpaths and public projects.

Do I need construction experience?

Not necessarily.

Some entry-level opportunities are suitable for people who haven’t worked in construction before.

Other vacancies may require things such as a White Card, driver licence, tickets or previous experience.

Always check the requirements in the individual job ad.

If experience isn’t required, don’t rule yourself out just because you haven’t worked on a construction site before.

Is civil construction physical?

Usually.

You’ll often be outdoors and working in active environments, so being comfortable with practical work is important.

Safety is also a major part of the job.

You’ll learn how to work safely around other workers, equipment and changing site conditions.

What will I learn?

Along with practical construction skills, you’ll learn how a real worksite operates.

That can include following plans and instructions, using tools and equipment, communicating with a team, taking measurements and completing work safely and to the required standard.
