Never heard of process manufacturing? You’re probably not the only one.
Process manufacturing is the work involved in producing products at scale using equipment, production processes and quality systems.
For someone who likes practical work but hasn’t considered a career in manufacturing before, a traineeship can be a good way to get started.
What does a process manufacturing trainee do?
The exact work depends on what the workplace produces.
You could be involved in:
- Preparing materials
- Operating production equipment
- Monitoring production processes
- Checking product quality
- Recording information
- Moving materials or finished products
- Keeping production areas clean and safe
- Following workplace procedures
Two manufacturing workplaces can look completely different, so always read the individual vacancy to see what the role involves.
Do I need manufacturing experience?
Not always.
Many traineeships are designed as entry-level opportunities, although requirements will vary between vacancies.
You may already have useful skills without realising it.
Being reliable, following instructions carefully, working safely, noticing when something isn’t right and being comfortable with practical tasks can all be valuable in a manufacturing workplace.
What will I learn?
You’ll learn how a production workplace operates and build practical skills while doing real work.
Depending on the role, this could include operating equipment, following production procedures, checking quality, working safely and helping keep production running smoothly.
You’ll gradually become more confident as you gain experience.
Is process manufacturing the same as engineering?
Not exactly.
Engineering trades often focus on making, maintaining, repairing or fabricating equipment and components.
Process manufacturing is generally more focused on operating and supporting the production process itself.
Some workplaces may involve elements of both.
Is the traineeship paid?
Yes.
You’ll be employed while you learn, complete formal training and work day to day with a Host Employer.
