Start your career in early childhood education

CHILDCARE & EARLY CHILDHOOD TRAINEESHIPS

A childcare traineeship lets you work in an early learning environment while developing the practical skills and qualification you need to work in early childhood education and care.

You’ll be employed while you learn, gaining experience alongside qualified educators.

What does a childcare trainee do?

You’ll work alongside experienced educators supporting children’s learning, development and everyday routines.

Depending on the workplace, your day could include:

  • Helping prepare activities and learning experiences
  • Playing and interacting with children
  • Supporting daily routines
  • Helping maintain a safe and welcoming environment
  • Observing children’s learning and development
  • Working with other educators
  • Communicating with children and families

Every day can look a little different.

Is childcare just playing with children?

Play is an important part of early learning, but there’s much more to the job.

Early childhood educators help create environments where children can learn, build confidence, develop new skills and feel safe and supported.

You’ll learn how to plan experiences, support children’s development and understand the responsibilities that come with working in early childhood education and care.

Do I need childcare experience?

Some childcare traineeships are designed for people entering the sector for the first time.

That doesn’t mean your other experience is irrelevant.

Babysitting, volunteering, coaching junior sport or helping care for younger family members may give you useful examples to talk about in an application.

Always check the individual vacancy for specific requirements.

What will I learn during a childcare traineeship?

You’ll develop practical skills by working alongside experienced educators.

Depending on your training and workplace, you could learn about:

  • Children’s learning and development
  • Creating safe environments
  • Supporting play and learning
  • Working with babies and young children
  • Communicating with families
  • Working as part of an early childhood team

You’ll build these skills over time while completing your formal training.

How does a childcare traineeship through CCGT work?

You are employed while you learn.

You’ll work day to day with a Host Employer, complete formal training and have CCGT there to support you throughout your traineeship.
