A carpentry apprenticeship gives you practical experience on real projects while you work towards becoming qualified in the trade.

You’ll earn while you learn, working alongside experienced tradespeople and completing formal training as part of your apprenticeship.

What does a carpentry apprentice do?

Carpentry involves much more than cutting timber.

Depending on the workplace and project, you could learn how to:

• Measure and cut materials
• Read plans and drawings
• Build wall and roof frames
• Install doors and windows
• Work on flooring and other building components
• Use hand and power tools safely
• Prepare and organise work areas

The exact work will depend on the Host Employer and the type of construction they do.

Where could I work?

Carpenters work across residential, commercial and other construction projects.

One apprenticeship might involve new homes. Another could involve renovations, framing, fit-outs or larger construction projects.

That means the experience can be quite different from one carpentry apprenticeship to another.

Do I need construction experience?

Not necessarily.

Some vacancies may ask for particular licences, tickets or previous experience, while others are suitable for someone starting from scratch.

If you’ve done construction at school, completed work experience, helped with practical projects at home or taken part in a pre-apprenticeship program, include it in your application.

Most importantly, show that you’re reliable, willing to learn and genuinely interested in the trade.

What will I learn during a carpentry apprenticeship?

You’ll build your skills gradually by working alongside experienced tradespeople.

Over time, you’ll become more confident using tools, reading plans, working with different materials and completing different stages of construction.

As your skills grow, so will the responsibility you can take on.

How does an apprenticeship through CCGT work?

CCGT employs you and places you with a Host Employer for your day-to-day work.

You’ll learn on the job, complete formal training and have ongoing support from CCGT throughout your apprenticeship.
