Like cars, engines and figuring out how things work?
An automotive apprenticeship gives you the chance to learn a trade while working in a real automotive workplace. You’ll earn while you learn, build practical skills on the job and complete a nationally recognised qualification as part of your apprenticeship.
CCGT recruits for different types of automotive apprenticeships depending on the vacancies available, so the work can vary from one role to another.
What does an automotive apprentice do?
Automotive apprentices work alongside experienced tradespeople learning how vehicles and automotive systems are serviced, maintained and repaired.
Depending on the role, your day could involve:
- Inspecting vehicles and components
- Completing servicing and maintenance
- Using workshop tools and diagnostic equipment
- Helping identify mechanical problems
- Repairing or replacing parts
- Keeping the workshop and equipment organised and safe
Some automotive apprenticeships focus on light vehicles such as cars and utes, while others may involve heavy vehicles, automotive parts or other areas of the industry.
Do I need experience with cars?
Not always. For many first-year apprenticeship opportunities, employers are looking for someone who is interested in the industry, reliable and ready to learn.
Working on cars at home, studying automotive subjects at school or completing work experience can help show your interest, but always check the requirements of the individual vacancy.
What will I learn?
You’ll gradually build your skills throughout the apprenticeship. Depending on the role, you could learn how to service vehicles, diagnose faults, safely use automotive tools and equipment, inspect components and complete repairs.
As your skills develop, you’ll be able to take on more responsibility in the workplace.
Is an automotive apprenticeship paid?
Yes. An apprenticeship is paid employment. You’ll work day to day with a Host Employer while completing formal training with a Registered Training Organisation.

Automotive could suit you if you enjoy practical work, problem-solving and learning how things work.
You don’t need to already know how to be a mechanic. That’s what the apprenticeship is for.
