Whether you’re looking for your first apprenticeship, helping your child figure out their career options, or you’re an employer wondering whether it’s the right time to take on an apprentice, there’s good news ahead.
As the Recruitment & Community Engagement Manager at CCGT, I’ve got a front-row seat to what’s happening across our local industries, apprenticeships and traineeships on the Central Coast and beyond.
Overall, I’m feeling really positive about the opportunities emerging across a range of industries.

Industries on the rise
While employer demand has shifted over the past 12 to 18 months, we’re seeing more opportunities emerge in industries that haven’t traditionally attracted as much attention, such as manufacturing. Many of these businesses tell me they’re incredibly busy and can’t keep up with demand.

I’m also seeing more opportunities in the civil sector as infrastructure projects continue to grow alongside population growth. In traineeships, areas such as Individual Support, Disability Support & Early Childcare continue to have strong demand for candidates.
What employers are looking for
Rising costs and economic changes mean employers have become much more selective. One thing I’ve noticed is that while some employers may be hiring fewer people, they’re placing even greater value on attitude, work ethic and employability skills.

Our host employers consistently tell me they’re looking for reliable, enthusiastic people who are keen to learn. Communication, initiative and being a good fit for the team are just as important as technical ability.
If you’re looking to enter the workforce, we can help you get there with career advice, development opportunities and ongoing support.
Breaking down common misconceptions
I still hear plenty of misconceptions from parents when they’re exploring career options with their children.
Some of the most common are that university is the only pathway to a successful career, trades don’t offer the same earning potential as university-qualified careers, or apprenticeships provide limited opportunities for career progression.
Your future starts here
You don’t need to have your whole life figured out. Not many people do. An apprenticeship or traineeship can give you the chance to learn and earn, build valuable skills and gain experience. It won’t always be easy, but it’s worth giving it a go.
The biggest mistake I see isn’t choosing the wrong apprenticeship. It’s doing nothing because you’re waiting for the right one, which may never come. Your future isn’t decided by one decision. It’s shaped by all the decisions you’re willing to take. Sometimes the first step is to say yes to the opportunity in front of you.
